The Lighthouse offers short online tutorials for students. These workshops have been created by VWU faculty and staff, so they are tailored to the Virginia Wesleyan curriculum. Global Scholars Application Guide



This workshop debunks eight common study away lies. A panel of Virginia Wesleyan University study away students discuss how they overcame these lies or how they just are not true, especially with prior planning!



This workshop discusses the steps necessary to obtain a passport and a REAL ID. Topics discussed include the required documents needed to apply for the two important documents.



This workshop features a discussion of the realities of being a woman studying abroad. The panel consists of Ashley Whipple ‘18, who studied in Tanzania, Audrey Bally ‘21, who studied in Japan, and Brianna Sandy ‘21, who studied in Morocco. In addition, the guest moderator is Dr. Lydia Kennedy, Associate Professor of Mathematics, who spent a semester studying abroad in Hungary.

Students who are conducting research with human subjects should watch this online workshop, which reviews the process of writing and submitting the required application to ¶¶ÄÌÊÓƵ’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). The workshop explains the basics of the IRB application form and common shortfalls of applications.



This online workshop prepares students to conduct advanced library research. Students are empowered to maximize Virginia Wesleyan’s research assistance and resources. It is taught by members of the library research faculty.



This online workshop offers instruction on citing sources. It focuses on the rationale for academic citations, explains when citations are necessary, and reviews tools that help with citations. It also provides an introduction to formatting citations using various academic conventions. Students are introduced to a free online reference management tool, Mendeley.



This online workshop explains how to create an oral presentation that effectively represents an internship or undergraduate research experience. It focuses on the technical elements of presentation design as well as oral communication strategies.
